Mount Isa road policing unit officer in charge Sergeant Shaune English said over the rodeo weekend his team stopped motorists travelling at 60km/h in unmarked areas. Although he couldn’t provide an exact number, Sergeant English said the offenders were varied in age and most were unaware of the default speed limit rules. The default speed limit in built up areas of Queensland is 50km/h, unless signed otherwise.
Sergeant English said ignorance was no excuse for speeding in unmarked zones, especially given Queensland’s default speed limit changed from 60km/h to 50km/h 15 years ago.
