Denzil and Katidjah, both 10, dominated their competition claiming more than 10 gold medals between them.
Katidjah’s six gold, one silver and two bronze medals saw her pip fellow Mount Isa athlete Sienna Stehbens, 7, by a mere two points for the title.
Denzil wasn’t content with being named the boys age champion, securing two carnival records.
The 10-year-old’s 14.40 secs in the 100 metres and 71.02 secs in the 400 metres weren’t personal bests, but were quick enough to smash the carnival records.
The wet conditions in Longreach didn’t seem to affect the athletes as they returned with a haul of 71 firsts, 41 seconds and 17 thirds from the 198 events on offer, including 53 personal bests.
Carmen ‘Zeus’ Preston, 16, had double success, smashing the under 18 women’s javelin record (37.60m) and open javelin record (35.42m).
Other carnival records fell to Erin ‘Beast’ Faithful in the 15-years shot put (10.68m), Michelle Bracs 11 years discus (25.42m) and Mitchell Hujanen in the 16 years hammer throw (34.27m).
Breanna ‘Cannon’ Waerea came agonisingly close to breaking the 12 years shot put record, missing by three centimetres with her 10.08m throw, but was handy enough to break the club record.
Other Mount Isa club records were improved upon, including Erin’s 15 years shot put throw and Carmen Preston’s throws in the 16 years and open javelin.
Channai Hall’s 25.35m discus throw elevated her to gold level Athletics North Queensland Development Squad.
Carmen’s open women’s javelin throw qualified her into gold also, while Emma Cursio’s shot put distance added to her silver qualifiers list.
Sienna Stehbens’ shot put throw was enough to give her the final legend certificate needed to qualify for the second ‘total legend’ trophy issued for the 2014 season.
Seven-year-old Sienna has now amassed an impressive nine legend certificates for the club.
Mount Isa’s Mitchell Hujanen, Channai Hall, Erin Faithful and Carmen Preston make up four of the five secondary school athletes selected for the team heading to Brisbane from October 23-26.
It is believed Breanna Waerea, Denzil and possibly Katidjah have unofficially been selected into the primary schools’ team, which travels to Brisbane on October 14-15.
