But the protesters' presence did not deter a stream of cinema-goers who walked past the protest calling for the festival's boycott.
A heavy police presence was on hand as the protest, of up to 100 people, protested loudly outside the Palace Centro James Street cinema at New Farm.
With chants such as "free free Palestine", "boycott Israel" and "Palace Centro you can't hide, you're supporting genocide", the protesters provided more of a nuisance factor to patrons than the "blockade" that was planned.
"The film festival is happening as Israel continues its brutal campaign of bombardment of Gaza, which has seen over 2000 Palestinians murdered in the past five weeks," protest organiser Rebecca Barrigos said.
New South Wales police took court action this week to prevent a similar protest in Sydney.
In 2012, Palace Centro played host to a Palestinian Film Festival.
