The Safe Night Out strategy was passed overnight.  Labor opposed the LNP plan, having put forward its own policy, which involved curfews and last drinks.  LNP MPs, favouring the line "not punishing the many for the sins of the few" in their responses, passionately advocated the education, venue, legislative and policing response the government had put forward.

In the end, given the government's numbers, it was a moot point.

But speaking on Wednesday morning, Mr Newman said he expected other states to follow suit.

"...All parts of Australia have experienced these terrible tragedies, and we are determined to do better than any other state," he said on issues such as the so-called 'coward's punch', now subjected to stricter sentencing requirements.

"I am not going to single any other jurisdiction out, but we look on on what is going on in other jurisdictions and they are not doing enough.

"In contrast in Queensland, you have a comprehensive strategy which deals with education, the policing, the laws, the venues, the ID scanners - and essentially we are putting a line in the sand and saying no to this as a community.

"We are going to try and do our very best to change the culture because we want to be a place where you can have a great night out. We are going to target the troublemakers, not the majority. We are going to target the troublemakers and actually send a strong message to them that their violence and anti-social behaviour is not acceptable.

"I am very confident that we are getting this right.  I am very confident that if the community gets behind it, and we need that to happen, that we will see a very positive change in this state.  And I reckon in a few years time, interstate will look at Queensland going 'we need to look at...' what I am sure they will be calling, the Queensland model.  I am very confident about that."

And so is the No Curfew campaign, which lobbied the government hard during the legislation's consultation process.

"From Coolangatta to Cooktown, young Queenslanders are right to be rejoicing," spokesman Alex Ghiculescu said.

"From the outset, we were guided by the immortal words of the Beastie Boys - 'you must fight for your right to party'...we thank the Premier and the government for taking the political risk of supporting us. We now call on all young Queenslanders to repay the favour by behaving responsibly when enjoying Queensland's nightlife."
