Two giant pink bunnies, the unofficial mascot for the 2013 event, have appeared on the steps of the Treasury Casino.

And they are set to receive a make-over during the 2014 festival, according to festival director Noel Staunton.

"They were extremely popular and people kept asking me about them all year," he said.

"I thought we have a few left, so we'll get them out and about."

The four-metre-high rabbits were designed by Perth street artist Stormie Mills as a city-wide installation.

They spent the month of September popping up in locations all over Brisbane, giving the impression they were breeding like... well, rabbits.

Passers-by were encouraged to take pictures and share their experiences with the bunnies via social media.

The festival retained six giant bunnies, with some others worn out by exposure to the elements and another donated to the new Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in South Brisbane.

Mr Staunton said the bunnies would again be placed around the city and South Bank and added Mills had accepted an invitation to return and redecorate his creations.

He said he had no idea what Mills was planning, but that he would be doing it stealthily.

"One day they'll appear pink, and the next day they'll appear with images on them," he said.

"I've just got to make sure the security people don't arrest him, thinking somebody's doing some damage to them!"

The 2014 Brisbane Festival officially launches on September 6, and culminates with the Riverfire event on September 27.
