Lifeguards closed beaches along the Gold Coast on Thursday morning, due to the dangerous winds and strong currents, but some surfers made the most of the conditions, with consistent waves between 2.5 metres and 3 metres.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of damaging winds and dangerous surf conditions for southeast Queensland on Thursday, with gusts of up to 90km/h predicted.

However, a severe weather warning for Brisbane was cancelled after being issued early Thursday morning.

The warning is still in place for the Gold Coast, Maroochydore, Coolangatta, Moreton Bay islands, Noosa and Fraser Island.

Gold Coast chief lifeguard Warren Young said he expected conditions to improve over the weekend.

"We haven't had many customers [here at Surfers Paradise]. A lot of experienced surfers are at the southern end [of the Gold Coast] and its more a spectator sport," he said.

Meanwhile, sunshine is expected to return to Brisbane on Thursday afternoon, ahead of six days of fine weather.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Janine Yuasa said 35 millimetres of rain fell at Ipswich, 25 millimetres at Mt Coot-tha and 22 millimetres at Toowong between 9am on Wednesday and 6am on Thursday.

Most other Brisbane metropolitan areas received between 2 millimetres and 8 millimetres over the same period.

"The isolated showers in the Brisbane area should clear in the afternoon," she said.

"It should be cloudy, but there won't be much in the way of rainfall."

The warmest day next week is likely to be Tuesday, when forecasters are tipping a top of 27 degrees.

In the event of strong winds Queensland Fire and Emergency Services says residents should:

* Move your car under cover or away from trees.

* Secure loose outdoor items.

* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.

* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.

* Surf Life Saving Australia recommends that you stay out of the water and stay well away from surf-exposed areas.

* Check your property regularly for erosion or inundation by sea water, and if necessary raise goods and electrical items.
