Jacob Michael Smith, 38, briefly faced the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday morning.

He has been charged with murder, attempted murder, deprivation of liberty, enter dwelling with intent at night and other charges which cannot be revealed for legal reasons.

Mr Smith, who had a small forehead gash and was wearing brown prison overalls, appeared relaxed in the dock with his forearms crossed.

During the two-minute hearing, police applied for a disease test order, which was consented to by Mr Smith.

A second court date at the Brisbane Magistrates Court was set for September 29.

Mr Smith gave a quick nod to his lawyer before being taken away.

The Mudgeeraba man was bitten on the leg and back by a police dog during his arrest on the Gold Coast on Wednesday morning.

He was later taken to the Dutton Park Police Station and charged on Wednesday night.

Ms Mari's body was discovered by a housemate in the lounge room of her rented Norman Park home on Milsom Street about 3.30am on Tuesday.

Police allege Mr Smith, a long-term friend of Ms Mari, was seen leaving the house around the time of her death.

Two of Ms Mari's young daughters were in the house at the time of her death.

The cause of death has yet to be officially determined, but Detective Inspector Rod Kemp said police were not confronted with a scene of "extreme violence".

Outside court, Mr Smith's lawyer Adam Magill said his client did not participate in the police interview on Wednesday.

"Obviously the charges are serious and we need to address them cautiously," Mr Magill told reporters.

Mr Magill said he and Mr Smith would now closely go through the police allegations.

"He's holding up OK. He's obviously a bit sore from the dog bite," Mr Magill said.
