The awards recognise achievements in identifying, preserving and promoting Queensland's cultural heritage.

Hanworth House, a 19-bedroom historic mansion, won the John Herbert Memorial Award.

The award was given to owners Marisa and Phillip Vecchio who bought the mansion in 2012 and began restorations soon after.

However, work was halted in March 2013 when the house was the target of an arson attack.

Devastatingly, the fire caused damage to 70 per cent of the original property, but the Vecchio's persevered with the restoration.

Hanworth House stand's today as one of state's oldest residences and just this month celebrated it's 150^th birthday.

Originally built in 1864, the mansion served as private home for two decades, before being sold to a philanthropist, who turned it into a women's hospice.

In 1995, it was bought by the Anglican Church and was renamed the "Hanworth Home for the Aged".

Ms Vecchio, who purchased Hanworth House in honour of her late mother, hopes the estate's successful restoration means its long tradition of service as a women's hostel is continued.

Queensland Heritage Council Deputy Chair John Cotter, who presented the awards on Wednesday night, said such places of signifiance reflected the community's identity.

"It is important to commend the people and the projects that aim to protect and conserve these places now and for future generations," Mr Cotter said.
