Trailing by three points with less than 60 seconds left, the Sea Eagles spread the ball wide before second-rower Tom Symonds scored a try to secure the 26-25 victory at Brookvale.
The Cloncurry product was rushed into Penrith’s starting side when regular hookers Kevin Kingston (injured) and James Segeyaro (compassionate leave) were unavailable for selection.
The hostile Brookvale crowd didn’t faze the 20-year-old though, who had a hand in his team’s first try to Nigel Plum in the first five minutes.
Former coach and mentor Ronald Major said Moseley always excelled in pressure situations during his junior career in Cloncurry.
‘‘Kierran always revelled in the big situations, seemingly feeding off the the energy of the crowd and his teammates,’’ Major said.
‘‘He always went that extra mile on the training paddock to prepare himself for the big matches, which is the trademark of a good player.’’
Moseley made his mark on the match, with several crunching tackles (20 total) in the defensive line and setting up his teammates in the offensive line with his talk and leadership.
But it was with ball in hand that Moseley was most dangerous, running 43 metres, including a line break, and part of a couple of tries for the visitors.
‘‘Playing as a hooker myself in my junior years, I really tried to pass on all my knowledge and experience to Kierran, so that he could learn from my mistakes,’’ Major said.
‘‘He’s had two strong years down at Penrith and having recently signed on for another two years, we are all excited for the possibilities.
‘‘Winning the under 20s last year and having a strong year in the NSW Cup this season has set him up well for the future.’’
‘‘All his friends and family back in Cloncurry are proud of him and will continue to support his progress.’’
Moseley has made first-grade coach Ivan Cleary’s job hard next week, if the two incumbents are available for Penrith’s round 26 match at home against the Warriors.
