“When my family gets together we sing and play instruments. I wanted to improve,” she said.
Verlaan moved from Brisbane 20 months ago to work at Medicare Local.
She wanted to pursue a hobby to fill her spare time, like many others who come to call Mount Isa home.
Verlaan chose singing.
“I thinking I was just looking for something different to do,” Verlaan said. She heard about the auditions earlier this year.
“One of the girls at work said I should try out for this.” Verlaan was unsure if her role in La Boheme would lead to more performances.
“I have no idea.
“If something comes up, I might try something else here.”
Verlaan was excited about the production and said the costumes were going to be a highlight.
But she was embarrassed to admit what her role in the production will be.
“Do I have to say?” she asked, before mentioning she will be acting as a grisette, an old fashioned term for a prostitute.
“I think I’ll get a fun costume,” Verlaan said.
La Boheme will be staged from 7.30pm on Thursday at the Mount Isa Civic Centre.
