The Queensland Country Women’s Association Gregory Branch is set to welcome competitors and spectators to the 52nd Horse Sports and Family Fun Day at the Gregory Racetrack and Recreation Reserve on September 21.
QCWA branch secretary Annie Backhaus said the event catered for all ages – from toddlers to over 70 – and provided enjoyment for spectators and competitors alike. “This humble event has been connecting community members for 52 years,” she said.
“It’s all about friendly competition, laughter and socialising, whether you are from a station, a town or you’re visiting our area.”
Ms Backhaus said the annual event proved to be a fun family day since it was first conducted in 1963.
Fun horse events such as a barrel race, billy can race and musical chairs, followed by novelty track and field events, such as three-legged races and sack races will be staged.
The event heads up an eventful week in the Burke Shire with the Morning Glory Festival and Burketown Campdraft, Rodeo and Races all held later in the week.
“We are very grateful for the continued sponsorship received from MMG Century Mines, many of the local stations and businesses and even some MountIsa businesses, such as the Irish Club and the Buffs Club,” Ms Backhaus said.
“Without their continued financial support, the volunteers on the day and of course the competitors and spectators, there wouldn’t be an event.”
The Queensland Country Women’s Association is a non-profit organisation and has a rich history in providing support to rural women and their families in Queensland.
The QCWA branch in Gregory was formed in 1962 and continues to provide friendship and support not just to members, but to the wider community.
