A grade soccer title.
The sides couldn’t be separated at the end of extra-time forcing the match into nerve-racking spot kicks, which the younger Parkside outfit thrived on.
Victorious coach Jason Howard was elated with the character his girls showed against a classy Tigers side.
“The girls were ecstatic with the win and it was well deserved for the amount of fight our defenders showed,” he said.
“Further forward, our strikers continually ran and put pressure on the Tigers until they were out on their feet.”
Tigers started the match stronger, with league best and fairest Hailey Renault having a host of chances to put her side ahead.
Tigers duo Zara Hartley and Lauren Jamieson also had strong chances to break the deadlock, but Rolland was up to the task.
Parkside’s best chance of the first half fell to Charlene Reynolds who bounced on a defensive mix-up by Tigers, but with an open goal beckoning, could only find the post.
Resuming at nil-all, both sides had chances to score, with the game’s most valuable player Bianca Glover and Shannon Sweeney coming close.
Parkside’s Georgia Howard was carried off the field in the dying stages on regular time, leaving her side with one less substitute.
With neither side able to break the stalemate, the match headed into 10 minutes each way of extra time.
Tigers appeared to have won the match when Parkside failed to clear a deflected shot from Josie Watt and Jamieson poked home the game’s first goal.
However, with just minutes remaining, Brooke Giardina scores on the counter-attack to equalise the match and send it to penalties.
“I thought we defended exceptionally all match, closing down their attack whenever possible,” Howard said.
“Once we regained possession, we were aggressive on the counter-attack, using our speed to our advantage.”
“It finally was rewarded when Brooke scored late in the second period of extra time.”
Tigers pair Jamieson and Sweeney missed their side’s first two penalties, while Parkside’s Rolland and Giardina converted from the spot.
Hartley’s conversion kept Tigers alive momentarily, but when Rolland saved Renault’s attempt, the match was over.
“We completely dominated the possession of the game for large parts of the match, but couldn’t convert our chances,” Tigers coach Arthur McHugh said.
Tigers claimed the minor premier shield, golden boot (Lauren Jamieson) and senior player of the year (Hailey Renault). Parkside’s absent star Khrystel Santos was awarded the junior player of the year award.
