A number of incidents were reported at the weekend with the damage bill not only a financial one – a loss of recreational activity for residents will occur after the city’s pool was one of the targets.
Mayor Tony McGrady said a number of rocks had been thrown over the fence of the pool, resulting in thousands of dollars’ worth of damage and forcing the closure of the facility while repairs are completed.
“This sort of mindless vandalism is truly abhorrent and shows a complete lack of respect for every business owner and resident of this city,” Cr McGrady said.
“The cost of repairs will have to be redirected from somewhere, certainly to the detriment of this city and its ratepayers.”
Cr McGrady said the damage bill for four separate vandal attacks was estimated at more than $25,000 after extensive damage was caused to property, including vehicles, at Outback at Isa, the Aquatic Centre, Buchanan Park, and one of the city’s main water reservoirs.
“If people are so bored that they have to resort to this type of behaviour then we have a massive problem,’’ he said.
‘‘This is unacceptable and reinforces the need for the continuance of the city-wide CCTV system and community campaigns aimed at stamping out this anti-social conduct.’’
The estimates of the vandalism in the past four days include:
■Outback at Isa - $5,200 (security locks, call out for fire services, false alarm, fire emergency buttons, head lamps, ride-on mower, security locks.)
■Town Pool - $1,200 (Rocks in pool and over grounds; does not allow for loss of business during closure.)
■Buchanan Park Motor Vehicle – $4,700 (smashed windows – passenger and driver side, smashed door lock passenger side, body panel damage.)
■No.2 Water Reservoir - $14,600 (Graffiti, smashed solar panel, cut security fences, smashed ventilators, smashed locks and door panels.)
