It took only one round for the 23-year-old to score victory against an opponent his father Glenn Johnston labelled an awkward challenger.
“Luke came into the fight against Kolby extremely confident as shown by his and his team’s body language,” he said.
“But once the fight started, Kolby discovered that his opponent was quite awkward to fight against, as he was evasive.”
This didn’t faze Johnston though, who attacked Akauola right from the opening bell.
“Kolby got a couple of shots on him early and floored him with a left-handed counter, when Luke Akauola tried a left hook of his own,” Mr Johnston said.
“After the count, about two minutes into the first round, Kolby didn’t ease up and continued to fire away punches.
“In the end it was a left-handed uppercut that floored his opponent and ended the fight.”
The victory at Townsville leaves Johnston with four wins and zero losses, including three knock-outs and two in the first round.
“Kolby’s fight was one of six professional fights on the card for Josh King’s bout, which included three Muay Thai fights too,” Mr Johnston said.
“The most important thing Kolby has taken out of this fight is the importance of preparation.
“In his last fight in Melbourne, he relied primarily on ability to win that fight.
“Kolby trained hard before this fight, which showed by how sharp he was right from the start.”
The light-middle weight fighter was supposed to fight on October 24 as an undercard for Alex Leapai but has had to pull out.
“Kolby won’t be able to fight in Brisbane at the end of October because he is heading back to Mount Isa for his daughter’s birthday,” Mr Johnston said.
“He had already planned the trip back to Mount Isa and knows another fight is just around the corner.”
