Mount Isa’s Splashez Aquatic Centre is entering its busiest time on the calendar with squad competitions starting last Friday.
Centre director Brian Rodriquez is excited by the number of children who are expected to participate in swim classes in the coming months.
“We started our squad sessions last Friday with more than 50 athletes training and competing against one another,” Rodriquez said.
“When school comes back next term, we will be flat-out down here with learn-to-swim classes, school carnivals and aqua starting up.”
Following the mid-term holidays, Splashez will host carnivals for most of Mount Isa’s schools, as well as schools from Camooweal, Urandangie and Dajarra.
“Along with all the school carnivals, we have more than 600 kids come in for learn-to-swim sessions each week, with six morning and five afternoons,” Rodriquez said.
He stressed that Splashez was able to hold all these events with the increased opening hours for the year.
“Before this year, we were a seasonal pool, meaning we would have only been open two weeks and would shut at the end of term one,” he said.
“Now we only close for six weeks a year from June to August, thanks to our new heating facilities.”
Splashez will soon introduce club nights on a Tuesday, to go along with the Friday squad sessions.
“Because of where we are positioned, kids don’t get the chance to compete against athletes from other regions every weekend,” Rodriquez said.
“This is why we have started Friday squad sessions back up, giving our swimmers a chance to stand up and compete against one another.
‘‘Tuesday’s club night will be more of a social night, as parents can mingle while their children compete.”
