■ May 31: Wanderers defeat Black Stars 30-8 for the second annual Trevor Chong Memorial Trophy. Chong’s brother-in-law Anton Saltmere played a key role in his second-half revival, as Wanderers outscored their opponents 18-8.
■ June 23: Corey Moseley (Cloncurry) and Corey Carlson (Wanderers) are selected in the Queensland Outback side to travel to Thursday Island to play against Northern United. Unfortunately their side loses to the Torres Strait Islander team 30- 24 on July 20.
■ June 23: Joseph Fonoimoana (Black Stars), Herbert Walden (Wanderers), Allan Aitkens (Cloncurry), Taylor Rub (Cloncurry), Nathaniel Lucas (Cloncurry) and Mark Bull (Wanderers) selected into the under 19s Queensland Outback side. Chris Waters from Cloncurry is named manager of the side.
■ August 16: Wanderers defeat Normanton 40-34 in the Mid-West rugby league final, with Kurtis Ritchie.
Lowlights:
■ May 30: The Doomadgee Dragons were unfortunately forced to forfeit the second half of the season due to transport issues. Before this issue, the Dragons were one of the best sides in the Mid-West competition. Let’s hope they can sort out their problems and rejoin the competition for 2015.
■ All season: The state of Alec Inch Oval declined all season long, with the grand final being played on a predominantly dirt field. The safety of both the region’s senior and junior players is at risk when the field isn’t up to sufficient standards. Now with all competitions wrapped up until the new year, the ground will get a chance to grow back.
■ All season: The regularity of injuries was a concern for all teams. Adam Kleier dislocated and fractured his left hip in the Wanderers semi-final against Town, robbing the star second-rower of a chance to play in the grand final. Another Wanderers player Cody Saltmere also missed significant time after breaking his jaw while representing the North Queensland Outback in Blackall.
