Launched in Brisbane on Monday night, the program also features a stage adaptation of classic sitcom Mother and Son, a drama about the 1942 clash between American and Australian soldiers, a play about singer Jimmy Little and works by David Mamet, Neil Simon, Samuel Beckett and Anton Chekhov.

Artistic director Wesley Enoch said next year was set to be a tremendous onstage adventure.

"2015 stands out as our most ambitious and wide-ranging in terms of content, actors and delivery," he said.

"Our season draws from our nationally recognised indigenous program, our showcasing of local independent theatre companies, partnerships with commercial presenters, plays commissioned from our New Works Program [and] the return of the musical."

QTC has secured government Super Star Funding to produce Ladies in Black, featuring music by Tim Finn and directed by Simon Phillips (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Love Never Dies).

It's based on the 1993 novel The Women in Black by Madeleine St John, set in a department store in the 1950s.

Arts Minister Ian Walker said it was another coup for Queensland.

"Ladies in Black will be nothing short of extraordinary," he said.

"With Tim Finn creating the music and our own Christen O'Leary as the star, this marks the triumphant return of true musical theatre to Queensland Theatre Company's stage."

Playwright Matthew Ryan said he hoped his new work Brisbane would shine a light on the famous Battle of Brisbane, when Australian and American soldiers clashed in the city's streets.

"There was something so mythic and enticing about a city on the edge of a war. A city waiting day after day to be swallowed by this giant conflict over the horizon," he said.

"The Australian soldiers were made to feel like second-best in their own country and the Americans felt unappreciated for defending our country. That tension built to a very ugly event in the middle of the city they were all supposed to be defending."

Ryan said the story was told through the eyes of young boy named Danny.

"1942 was a coming-of-age for our city. What better way to explore it than through the eyes of a 14-year-old kid?" he said.

"He's a lovely character to write. Imaginative, undervalued and bursting with potential - much like Brisbane itself."

One of Enoch's more savvy choices is uniting many of the young dynamos of Brisbane theatre in a reworking of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull.

The story of romantic entanglements between writers and actors will be adapted by Todd MacDonald, recently lauded for his one-man show The Button Event, and Daniel Evans, whose work Oedipus Doesn't Live Here Anymore will also be produced at QTC in 2015 after winning the Premier's Drama Award this year.

The Seagull will star Emily Burton, Helen Cassidy, Amy Ingram, Jason Klarwein, Barbara Lowing, Brian Lucas, Christen O'Leary, Hugh Parker and Lucas Stibbard.

Another plank of the 2015 program was the DIVA series, in which five acclaimed female performers starred in tour-de-force productions.

One will be singer Naomi Price in her breakout solo show Rumour Has It, in which she plays English chanteuse Adele.

"We've toured the show all around the country for two years but to be presented by the state theatre company in 2015 really is an honour for us, and this season will be very special for all involved," she said.
