The Queensland Independent Remuneration Tribunal has handed down its pay determinations for former MPs.

Once entitled to a resettlement allowance of either three or six months of base salary - depending on the number of terms an MP had served - an exiting member of parliament will now only receive 12 weeks of their base salary as a "transition allowance" - unless they have been kicked out. That equates to a $34,350 handshake.

Travel arrangements have included commercial air and rail travel benefits.

Former MPs who had been elected three times and served a minimum of seven years were entitled to one return flight each financial year within Australia, New Zealand or Papua New Guinea.

Spouses received the same benefit.

If the flight was longer than three hours, eligible MPs received an upgrade.

Railways of Australia Gold Passes were made available to Premiers, ministers and the Speaker who had served at least one term, the leader of the opposition after six years, and MPs who had spent 20 years in parliament.

Those who didn't get the Australia-wide gold pass, received a Queensland Rail gold pass.

But come 2018, that will all change.

All commercial air travel and rail travel entitlements must be claimed by December 31 of that year, with no further entitlements provided or claimable after that date.

The new rules apply to MPs elected from now onwards and will apply to MPs who leave involuntarily - by either being voted out, or losing a pre-selection battle.

Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek, who had the unenviable position of being the only minister to have a press conference scheduled following the tabling of the tribunal decision, took a hands off approach in answering whether or not it was fair.

"Importantly it is an independent remuneration tribunal that we were asked to set up, that the general consensus was it should be an independent tribunal and I would be referring you to them for comments about those matters," he said.

"Once again, this is something that has been set by an independent tribunal. So we had the problem in the past with it being linked to another system, the federal system. The Premier set up, after significant issue over the last couple of years, he set up an independent tribunal, and that is why it is most appropriate for you to speak to them about that."

But he did have an opinion on whether the public would ever be happy on the issue of politician pay.

"No," he said. "No, the public, as other members of the cabinet have said, would say that if we were paid nothing that that would be too much as well."

Together Union secretary Alex Scott on the other hand, was not backwards in coming forward.

"This tribunal is as out of touch with community standards as the government that appointed it," he said.

"At the end of the day, public sector workers on temporary contracts don't get redundancy payouts, people in the private sector who lose their job don't get redundancy payments.

"You get redundancy payments because of downsizing, you don't get a redundancy payment if you lose your job because of poor performance."
