Fairfax Media reported on Tuesday about 25,000 of Queensland's lowest-paid public servants received a 3 per cent increase to their minimum wage "safety net".

That wage increase was granted by the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission in August and increases began from September 1.

That increase is separate from the 2.2 per cent rise awarded through the annual enterprise bargaining agreement.

Depending on how low their award wage had become, these public servants received a portion of a maximum $22.30 a week pay rise.

On Monday, a government spokesman said the government "needed time to get its head around the issue".

Fairfax Media asked if the 3 per cent minimum wage increase meant the Queensland Government's 2.2 per cent annual wage increase was now too low, given inflation was now running at 3.2 per cent in Brisbane.

Mr Elmes' spokesman said the government had nothing to add to the story and doubted the minister was available to answer questions.

"I don't think so," the spokesman said.

"The government has said it has nothing to add to the story.

"We are happy with the 2.2 per cent annual pay rise.

"We think it is the correct and proper position to take."

Fairfax Media asked again to speak to the minister.

The government repeated it had nothing to add, saying the story had been "comprehensively covered".

The spokesman also declined to answer questions by email.

Mr Elmes has been responsible for Queensland's public sector renewal program since 2012, assisting Premier Campbell Newman.
