It is because of this that 17-year-old Brogden was destined for hockey success from a very young age.
“I started hockey back in 2004 when I was seven years of age and played in the juniors until 2008,” Brogden said.
“Unfortunately, there were no junior competitions for a couple of years, meaning I couldn’t play.”
“This meant I had to wait till I was old enough to play in the men’s competition before I could get another game.”
Brogden resumed his career last year, taking the Aces all the way to the grand final.
“Due to family tradition, I have only played for Aces and will only play for one club for as long as I stay in Mount Isa,” he said.
“But I’d have it no other way, as they have made me into the player I am today.”
The striker credits his father Nathan as the biggest influence on his career and always being there to assist him further his career.
“When I was younger, I always used to watch dad play and style my game on him,” he said.
“I’ve come a long way since then, scoring in each of our two grand finals wins for Aces.”
On the back of three straight titles, Brogden is aiming to have a big off-season to help guide Aces to their fourth successive title.
“We had a pretty strong season this year but with people always being away, it was hard to build combinations at time,” he said.
“But our whole side always seem to connect when we are on the field together.
“I’ll keep training regularly in the off-season to maintain my fitness and keep improving my skills.”
It’s these tough Mount Isa hockey matches that have made the striker fall in love with the game.
“You always want to challenge yourself and playing against T-Birds when they had two Australian and Queensland representatives was tough,” he said.
“But all those matches make you a stronger player and that’s why I love hockey.”
“The high element of skill, intense fitness levels and team spirit involved in the sport are amazing and something that I would highly recommend to everyone.”
