The body of Mark Emanuel Spencer, 37, was found on the back porch of his house on Foxwell Road at Coomera about 4am on Wednesday.
"He's got head injuries which suggest some sort of implement was used, but we're not in a position to say what that was," Detective Superintendent David Hutchinson said.
Superintendent Hutchinson said police believe Mr Spencer was killed at the house.
Mr Spencer's male housemate, who is not a suspect, found the body. He has been interviewed by detectives.
Superintendent Hutchinson said Mr Spencer was known to police, but only for minor matters.
He said Mr Spencer was not believed to have been linked with criminal gangs or bikies.
Police are appealing for any information about any suspicious activity in the Foxwell Road area between 12 and 4am on Wednesday. They are also calling on anyone who knew Mr Spencer and may know details about the case to come forward.
