With the inclusion of the drought-induced ultra-filtration water charge, homeowners are urged to find a solution to help them budget before personal debt gets too much to handle.
With more than $1.5 million in outstanding rates in Mount Isa, many are turning to the budget-friendly method of direct debit payments.
More than 1000 residents have already signed up for direct debit rate payments and find the method the best and least stressful way to stay ahead of the bills.
By approaching your bank and setting up a direct debit using your rates account number, you can pay weekly, fortnightly or monthly, often settling the account before rates notices are issued.
Mayor Tony McGrady urged residents who might be struggling to pay their accumulated rate debts to visit the council customer service and discuss the options that suited their needs.
“We understand that people are doing it tough, and we welcome the opportunity to help people to find the best solution for their needs – it’s never too late to reassess the debt and begin a new payment system,” Cr McGrady said.
“With the ongoing drought conditions and the increase in water costs, times are going to be tough for a lot of Queenslanders, including all residents of Mount Isa, and forward planning for a tighter budget will be critical for most.”
Pensioner June Smith receives a bill averaging $1200 every six months, and has set up a direct debit with her bank of $100 each fortnight as she receives her pension.
This equates to 12 payments throughout the six month, totalling $1200, which pays her rates in full by the time payment is due.
“By paying rates this way, it makes it really easy to plan my budget. I never have to worry about finding a large amount of money at short notice,” Mrs Smith said.
