Police were called to Burston Street in Mackay about 8.45pm on Wednesday, where a man armed with a gun was holed up inside in a house.

Officers cordoned off surrounding streets and declared an "emergent situation" under the Public Safety Preservation Act, as specialist negotiators were called in about 10.45pm.

The negotiators spoke with the man for more than nine hours, trying to coax him outside.

The 49-year-old man eventually surrendered peacefully about 7.30am on Thursday.

The area has been declared safe and the man has been taken into custody for questioning.
