Newcastle-trained mare Lucia Valentina is the reigning Caulfield Cup favourite.  The last four-year-old mare to win the Turnbull Stakes was the Mark Kavanagh-trained Devil Moon in 2007.

It is 10 years since Elvstroem achieved the Turnbull-Caulfield Cup double.

Because this is a set weights and penalties race it can deliver upset results –  evidenced by Studebaker at $15 in 2003 who escaped penalties and carried just 54.5 kilograms. Last year Happy Trails was sent out a $26chance. The last back-to-back winner was the front-running machine Vo Rogue in 1987-88.

Interestingly, in the past eight years every winner has drawn a single figure barrier, which does not bode well for the likes of Hawkspur (13), Green Moon (14), The Offer (15) and Sertorius (16).

MANIFOLD STAKES

With the early favourite Thinking Of You to miss, this is now a wide open race. Maastricht (9) , winner of both starts at the provincials, is the untapped runner.  She shows potential and the Hawkes team are conservative in placing their horses. Pittsburgh Flyer (7) was wide and brave at Caulfield, Royal Ocean (5) showed grit to win in Adelaide and Fontein Ruby  (2) can improve on her Caulfield failure.

TURNBULL STAKES

This will be a load-up leg for many.  Puissance De Lune (8), second last year, worked home well in the Makybe Diva and should settle right on the pace from his inside draw.   Last year's winner Happy Trails (2), Super Cool (3) and  Hawkspur  (4) are among the  threats.  Am risking the mares, Silent Achiever  (6), who has won one of eight Melbourne starts, and Lucia Valentina (16), yet to place in three starts on good-rated tracks.

BLAZER STAKES

Ideal race for May's Dream (1), unbeaten in three second-up starts. She likes to sit back and unleash a powerful finish.  Politeness (4) will be favourite on the strength of her strong fourth at Caulfield when resuming, but is yet to win beyond 1200metres.  Suavito (10) is racing extra well and gets blinkers. The blowout runner could be Scratchy Bottom (11),  a good stayer who has won both her fresh starts.

TAVERN STAKES

Lucky Hussler (2) has the  formline through stablemate Trust In A Gust to say he's the one to beat.  The only negative is the 58kilos.  Chances to Under The Louvre (4), just beaten at the track and trip last start, Spirits Dance (8), who will lead and take running down, and Ryker (11)  is suited by the rise to 1400.
