Ricciardo was attempting to negotiate the final corner of the track 20 minutes into the 90 minute session when he lost control and tore the front-left corner off his Red Bull car in a heavy crash.
Nico Rosberg came out on top, while F1's youngest-ever participant Max Verstappen was forced from the track after smoke began pouring from his car.
Rosberg's Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton finished second and Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso rounded out the top three.
Williams' Valtteri Bottas registered the fourth fastest time, while fellow Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen came in fifth place for Ferrari.
