The older woman, a taxi rank supervisor, received a cut to her face and nose and was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital for treatment, following the alleged attack.
Police say the victim was working on Wickham Street when she attempted to stop a man getting into a taxi with food about 4.15am, prompting a verbal dispute.
A woman accompanying the man, who had already entered the taxi, alighted the vehicle and punched the older woman in the face.
The pair then fled the scene on foot.
Police apprehended the woman nearby shortly after.
