The 35-year-old was agitatated and demanded to use the telephone when he walked into the Park Ridge McDonald's on the Mount Lindesay Highway Service Road about 10.40pm on Wednesday.
Police allege he then pulled out the drill and a cigarette lighter, threatening to burn the store down and kill everyone inside.
Two staff members hid in an office while another two fled through a rear door to the car park.
However, the man allegedly followed a teenage employee and grabbed her, threatening to hurt her with the drill.
She was only released when another staffer used a metal broom to strike the attacker.
The man jumped over a wall and fled the scene, before he was found by police.
Police claim he was still acting aggressively and a Taser had to be used to subdue him. However in the process the man bit an officer and spat on another.
The man was taken to the Beenleigh Watch House where he was assessed by paramedics. He was transferred to the Princess Alexandra Hospital, where it is understood he is under sedation.
Charges are yet to be laid.
Police said the female employee only sustained minor scratches to her legs.
