THE Black Stars cricket team has got off to a scorching start in the Mount Isa Cricket Association this season, winning its first two matches. Some are putting it down to a committed team effort, while others are crediting new skipper Ian Barlow as the mastermind behind the start. The third train of thought is that last season’s captain and all-rounder Nathan Giles has taken a step back this season, to concentrate on his batting.

BLACK Stars bowler Nathan Mann will be hoping for third time lucky with his bowling against Bulls on Saturday. In both the opening two matches, Mann has recorded two wickets in as many balls but couldn’t secure the third wicket for his hat-trick. Mann got the consolation on the weekend of snatching two run-outs in three balls, making him contribute four wickets in five balls against the Challengers.
WARRIGALS new rugby union uniforms have yet to taste victory, after two tough losses to start the season. Admittedly, the Dingoes were missing several key players at the weekend, but if they can’t secure their first win of the season against Euros, people will start talking about the ‘‘curse of the new jersey’’. The jerseys themselves have already caused headaches too, with the Dingoes having to send many back as the size wasn’t correct, and the shirts were more like rash-vests on their forwards.
TOWNVIEW Cricket Club suffered its first Twenty20 cricket loss since 2012, when they fell to Panthers at the weekend. Victorious captain Archie Macpherson has thrown down the gauntlet to the rest of the league, saying his side possesses the most lethal bowling attack. With Peter Shah, Alex Amos, Steve Andrews and Blaine MacCormack all finding mid-season form already, the Panthers skipper might be correct.
THREE of Mount Isa’s strongest junior athletics stars have just returned from the primary schools state championships in Brisbane. Ten-year-old Denzil Perkins managed to qualify for the 200 metres national championships in Tasmania next month. Duo Breanna Waerea, who made the final for the 12 years’ shot put, and Katidjah Fraser tried their hardest and did the city proud in their respective events.
MORE than 10 junior Isa Rats triathlete stars braved the hot weather on Sunday morning, to participate in a bike skill session. Held at Mount Isa’s Buchanan Park, the junior stars learnt riding skills, while negotiating through pre-set courses. With such a strong response, there will be more sessions in the future to grow our juniors skill sets.
THE recognition for the Sunset Tigers keeps rolling in, as the club was acknowledged on Imparja at the weekend. After claiming the 2014 grassroots NRL club of the year award last month, the club and all its hard workers had a story on Imparja, highlighting how far the club has come in just three years.
