The new $7.4 million high-dependency care annexure will provide a higher level of care for Cloncurry’s ageing residents.
Acting Mayor Bob McDonald said the facility would be of great benefit to the town.
“Our older generation can grow old with peace of mind that there is a first class aged care facility in Cloncurry and that they will be near their family and their loved ones in the twilight of their lives,” he said.
The council was pleased to see Health Minister Lawrence Springborg at Cloncurry for the opening of the new Cloncurry Aged Care Annexure at the Cloncurry District Hospital.
Cr McDonald also extended his gratitude to the state government, the North West Health Board and the auxiliary committee for their commitment in seeing the facility completed to such a high standard.
There was more great news for seniors with the council also recently acquiring St Andrews Garden Settlement, a 27-unit independent senior living complex, from the Anglican Diocese. STAGS is made up of 24 one-bedroom and three two-bedroom units.
“With the acquisition of the STAGS, our community can be reassured that we have secured a good facility for Cloncurry seniors for many years to come,” Cr McDonald said.
STAGS will complement the new aged care annexure at the hospital, allowing people to live independently until they require a higher level of care.
Then they can progress to the annexure at the hospital, while staying in the town they know and with the ones they love.
Council staff have been working with the residents to ensure that the transition has been smooth and worry free.
This has fortunately been the case for most parts.
“Council’s focus on the community’s well-being and improving health services will continue, with the completion of the Community’s Health Vision, this week’s opening of the new health precinct and the ongoing support to our local health professionals,” Cr McDonald said.
“Council remains committed to working with the North West Health Board to see continued improvement in our Shire’s services and facilities.”
Cr McDonald added: “Council look forward in working with the North West Health Board and the state government for some much-needed funds to upgrade and modernise our hospital. Such upgrades will only help support our community and the continued growth of the resources sector.”
