More than 500 people gathered to celebrate Brisbane's Welcome to Australia Walk Together event.

People of all different cultures, religious beliefs and countries came together to cross the Kuripla Bridge to the Supreme Court plaza.

While Chinese dragons danced to the beat of Korean drums, the group walked in harmony, chatting to those next to them, while holding signs saying 'you are welcome here', 'refugees are welcome here' as well as the now obligatory 'Abbott hater' t-shirt.

But the majority of attendees were more concerned with celebrating and embracing positivity than making a political stance.

"I am here because I just want to tell the Australian people there are people from different countries, races and religions here, but we are all in this together," Merantie Synasudim, a Brisbane resident originally from Indonesia, said.

"We are all the same."

Bunya resident Denise Powell said she made the decision to walk because living in a democracy, "I fell personally responsible for our government policy".

"I think we can do better than what we are doing," she said.

"I think we can do better than this.

"I'd like to see our country welcoming more asylum seekers.  Besides the ethical side of things, having some compassion for people, which humanity is supposed to do, I think it makes economic sense as well."

Rosa Yor, who came to Wavell Heights, from South Sudan, via Egypt, said she walked "to show people that although we are different, we are the same".

"It is very important to show the world that Australia does welcome refugees," she said.

"If you don't come together like this, you don't know each other.  I wish we could do it every month."

Gyu Tae, a Korean ex-pat who goes by Joseph in Australia, led the crowd as part of Hanmadang, a traditional Korean performers group.

He said sharing culture was one way people could come together.

"We have different ways of thinking, different cultures, different countries," he said.

"But we all need to remember that we are all just common people."

Nineteen walks were carried out across the country on Saturday.
