The theatre company launched its 2015 season on Monday night, the first for new artistic director Chris Kohn.

He said half of the 10 writers and directors behind the six main stage productions were women.

"You wouldn't think there would be glass ceilings in the arts of all places, but in fact there have been for a range of reasons," Kohn said.

"We're really committed to creating opportunities for emerging female writers or female artists who need a platform for their work."

In Julia-Rose Lewis's Samson, four teenage friends in a country town deal with the death of a friend. It will star Ashleigh Cummins from Puberty Blues in her La Boite debut.

Playwright and human rights lawyer Suzie Miller will adapt a new version of Medea, the classic Greek tale of betrayal and revenge.

Kohn will direct the production, which will star stage powerhouses Christen O'Leary and Helen Christinson as the wife and lover of Golden Fleece hero Jason.

"I feel like my job in directing is getting out of the way and letting these incredibly powerful and interesting women take this work by the throat," he said.

Maxine Mellor will adapt children's classic The Wind in the Willows as a one-man show, to be performed by Play School favourite and Redfern Now star Luke Carroll.

Mellor said writing opportunities were rare for both genders.

"Major companies have to program between classics, international and local work, so there's already only a small percentage of places to get work on," she said.

"Sometimes people don't want to take a risk on an unknown name, but that's a Catch 22, because how do you become a known name unless you give somebody a chance, and follow that up?"

Kohn acknowledged his predecessor David Berthold, whom he replaced mid-year, had sown the seeds for more female voices with La Boite's Artist-in-Residence program.

"I don't think it's a seismic shift, but I think it's good to overtly express that as a philosophy," he said.

"The sign of a mature arts community is one in which there is substantive equality ... diversity is a key marker of excellence."

Brisbane collective shake & stir will remount their popular 2014 adaptation of Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes and Dirty Beasts, and local wunderkind Benjamin Schostakowski will apply his particular brand of whimsy and wonder to Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

La Boite's final show for 2015 will be Prize Fighter, a blistering new work by Ipswich actor, speaker, community leader and playwright Future D. Fidel, whom Kohn first met in his previous role as an Australia Council theatre diversity associate.

Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Fidel escaped the war-torn country as a child, spending eight years in a refugee camp in Tanzania before being granted asylum in Australia.

His own experiences and those of friends have inspired the play, which follows a Brisbane boxer coming to terms with his past as a child soldier in Africa.

"It's part of a bigger project to look at how La Boite as a theatre company can be as open to the full cultural diversity of the city in which it lives," Kohn said.

"[We want to] search out those compelling stories that might come from new voices and a range of backgrounds."

The popular La Boite Indie program will also return in 2015, featuring plays by local and national emerging writers – Natalie Abbott, Krystal Sweedman, Elbow Room and James Brennan.

La Boite will also mark 90 years in operation by collecting and digitising programs, flyers, posters and other show memorabilia.

La Boite began life in 1925 as the Brisbane Repertory Theatre Society, founded by Barbara Sisley and J.J. Stable. It moved to its own venue in 1967, a hollowed-out house in Hale Street at Milton, dubbed "The Box", before shifting to the purpose-built theatre next door.

La Boite shifted to the Roundhouse Theatre at Kelvin Grove in 2004 after the revamped Suncorp Stadium made a Milton location untenable.
