The assistant minister to the premier on e-government announced his involvement as an investor and adviser to a consortium of "prominent Queensland businessmen" who plan to build a $100 million cable car project in the Gold Coast Hinterland.

In what some would call more of a Shelbyville idea, Mr Stevens first proposed the project, then known as Naturelink, in 1998.

The proposal faced fierce criticism and protest by green groups, which said it threatened the natural environment.

It was nixed by the Beattie Government in line with its ban on commercial activities in national parks.

The LNP overturned that ban after it came to government and has since encouraged eco-tourism ventures.

In announcing his involvement in the project which would see a cable car stretch from Neranwood to Springbrook in the Gold Coast Hinterland, Mr Stevens mentioned its "visionary" and "exciting" nature while promising not to be involved in any government decisions regarding the project.

"As many would know I proposed a similar project 16 years ago and believe I can add significant knowledge and expertise to this proposal to avoid the pitfalls of the previously proposed project," he said.

"I have advised the Integrity Commissioner of my proposed involvement in this project well and truly ahead of my acceptance of any role in the project and he has cleared my involvement and capacity to be involved whilst being a member of parliament and an assistant minister in the Newman LNP government.

"He has advised, of course, that I should have no part in the application or the decision making process and I shall adhere to that requirement in absolute totality.

"He did advise that I make the premier aware of involvement in the project and I have complied with that direction."

One member from the crossbench yelled out to Mr Stevens to "say hi to Gordon" in a reference to former Labor minister Gordon Nuttall who was jailed for corruption.

"No one else in the government is aware of the proposal until this disclosure and certainly not of my involvement in this exciting tourism infrastructure project for Queensland," he continued.

"All matters in relation to the project application process, will be handled by the chief executive officer of the consortium and from this announcement day forward, I will have no public comment to make, no role in the application process, and no advocacy role with either the public or government members as I leave the government absolutely free to judge the value of this visionary project to the Gold Coast and Queensland economy, on an apolitical, merit based assessment."

Thanking the House for allowing him "the opportunity to be 100 per cent transparent, accountable and honest in regarding to this difficult situation for me as the member of Mermaid Beach", Mr Stevens said he hoped the project could be judged separate from his involvement.

"I hope the house accepts my sincere attempt to have this project considered solely on its individual merit, free of bias, possible political point scoring, or interference," he said.

Mr Newman had previously been critical of MPs who continued to work as doctors while in parliament, but said Mr Steven's role was different.

"There are other MPs in the Queensland Parliament who seem to keep their hand in terms of their medical practices and I have spoken about that in the past as well," he said.

"And I just say that Mr Stevens will be working very diligently as an assistant minister, he will be doing everything that he has to do, otherwise he won't be an assistant minister for very long.  But I know there is no threat of that.

"I'll tell you the difference - because in the normal working day, they are heading off to treat their patients and he won't be doing that."

A spokeswoman for the Integrity Commissioner said it was for Mr Stevens to release the advice he was given in relation to his investing and consulting role in the multi-million project.

Mr Stevens has not responded to requests for comment.
