The event was held yesterday because it conflicted with an awareness day event.
Tuckshop manager Ronda Llewellyn said one student was alarmed when five years ago she first served spiders – which are a concoction of soft drink and ice-cream.
“He said ‘I don’t like spiders ... where do you keep them?’” Mrs Llewellyn said.
“Now the kids all ask for spiders.”
But these treats can only be served twice a term as part of the canteen’s “red day”.
The school followed a strict healthy menu approved by the Departments of Education and Health.
Townview State School had a five “apple” rating, which made the canteen menu one of the healthiest in Queensland schools, Mrs Llewellyn said.
Mrs Llewellyn said she tried to introduce food that she had as a child into the canteen.
