The post on the ‘Mt Isa Community & Events Guide’ Facebook page showed a picture of a pair of dogs fighting, under text which said ‘Mt Isa dog fights, tonight 31/10’.
“Great night. $5 entry. $10 per dog,” the post said.
There was also a mobile phone number to call “after 7pm for location” but it was indecipherable.
Mount Isa Police District Inspector Trevor Kidd said inquiries were being made as information about the alleged event came to hand.
"We ask anyone that has any information to come forward and contact us,” he said.
“Dog fighting is unacceptable… we don't stand for cruelty to animals."
"We are making inquiries in relation to it this accusation, and ask people to come forward with information."
"Organised dog fighting is against the law and we will be investigating any information in relation to animal cruelty and dog fighting, and they will be prosecuted."
Mount Isa Mayor Tony McGrady also condemned the 'abhorrent' appeal.
“Obviously the idea of treating animals in this way is not only absolutely abhorrent, but is highly illegal and any activity of this kind will never be tolerated in Mount Isa,” he said.
“The Mount Isa City Council absolutely condemns this behaviour and will turn any evidence found in relation to these matters over to police for full investigation.”
“Whether this incident has been posted as a hoax, or an attempt at promoting an actual event, this needs to be reported immediately to police and the full force of the law shall be felt by those responsible.”
