The Treasurer defended his relationship with the Premier in a radio interview on Thursday morning.

Rumours of a rift between the pair have been bubbling over in George Street for the better part of the last six months.

Last month, the Queensland Police Union added fuel to the fire when its president, Ian Leavers, accused Mr Nicholls of attempting to destabilise the government for his own leadership ambitions.

Mr Newman defended Mr Nicholls in Parliament, calling him his "friend" and adding a hand to the shoulder as emphasis.

Speaking to Fairfax Radio 4BC Mornings, Mr Nicholls said the pair were getting along fine.

"Let me say, I've know Campbell since 2002 and I do like him and we have a great working relationship," he said.

"I think what people are looking for out of their government is people who are solid, are united, who provide leadership and who have a plan to provide for the future.

"That's what this government has been about -  whether it is being safer at home, whether it is having better access to services in the hospitals, or whether it's things like the $300 million we put into upgrading our schools."

On Wednesday, Mr Newman seemingly acknowledged his poor personal polling when he next year's election was "not about who you like", but "who can best lead Queensland".

Mr Nicholls said the Premier was right.

"The people of Ashgrove will make that decision, but I know he's been a hard working local representative," he said.

"Campbell has been delivering for the people of Ashgrove."

The election can be held any time up until June next year, but is rumoured to be just months away.
