Lloyd, who has had no involvement with Essendon since his retirement at the end of 2009, will spend two days per week working with Bomber key forwards Joe Daniher, Jake Carlisle and Patrick Ambrose on their goalkicking routines.

His return comes just days after the controversial departure of 2014 senior coach Mark Thompson, Lloyd reuniting with 2000 premiership teammate James Hird and another recently returned Bomber in Mark Harvey.

The triple Coleman medallist, who sits seventh on the AFL's all-time goalkicking list with 926 goals, fielded offers from a number of clubs after sending his own goalkicking "manifesto" to an array of AFL senior coaches.

But he's delighted to be back at his old stamping ground as his former club continues to negotiate the most difficult period in its history due to the on-going supplements scandal and its associated fall-out.

"Obviously it's been shattering for everyone involved, and it's ended relationships," he said. "This isn't about me going back to help get them back on their feet, it's about a technical issue in which I think I have something to offer.

"But in saying that, like everyone else who's been involved with the club, I'm just desperate to see them get through this period and try to rebuild and get it back to the great club it once was."

Lloyd said his involvement would still allow him the time to fulfil his media roles, and other specialist coaching positions with the NAB football academy. And he's been assured by the Bombers he'll be given enough time working with the Bomber forwards without interference from fitness staff worried about workloads.

"I wouldn't have got involved otherwise," he said. "They've identified the players who need assistance, and they're going to get 80-100 quality shots at goal a week, enough to really improve them over the next four or five months."

Lloyd, whose own goalkicking routine saw him finish his career with a conversion rate of 69 per cent, higher than any other leading goalkicker in the game's history bar Tony Lockett, said he'd continually felt frustrated over the past five years in his media roles seeing AFL footballers miss easy shots at goal because of poor technique or the lack of a routine.

"Are they actually getting the technical and psychological help they need when it comes to match day pressure? I don't think they have been. "Nowadays there's a coach for everything, but there's never really been a coach for kicking for goal.

"So it's about giving individual players who need it that one-on-one time to improve whatever aspect it is, whether it's their ball drop, their run-up, their follow-through … there's a lot of different reasons guys kick well or not so well, so it's finding out what works for that player then building on that, and making it so repetitious over the next four or five months that come round one, they're really confident.

"It's something I've developed a real passion for watching footy over the last four or five years. It's my niche, I suppose. I want to have the media as my No. 1 priority but if I'm to get involved in an AFL club, that's where I can give the most benefit."

Lloyd will commence his Essendon role immediately, the first session when senior players return to the club for training on Monday.

"I'll do Mondays and Fridays, we'll have 45-minute sessions, there'll be a lot on the track, a lot of video analysis and just going back and watching vision," he said. "Hopefully, by the start of next year they'll be coaching themselves.

"You're in trouble if you miss a shot and you don't know why because your routine chops and changes. This will be about developing something so that on game day if they miss the first one, they'll know what went wrong and what to get back to."
