The Electrical Trades Union and The Services Union have banded together to urge their members to vote down the employment agreement being offered to electricity workers in Energex, Ergon and Powerlink.

The government said the enterprise bargaining agreement being offered to the 8,500 energy workers offered employment security, through the inclusion of a "no forced redundancies" clause.

"The companies have been talking with workers throughout the enterprise agreement negotiations and they know employment security is a major concern for staff," Mr Nicholls said late last week.

"...Providing employment security to existing employees for the duration of new employment agreements will enable the companies to promote business continuity and stability during a period of potential transition to lease arrangements."

But the ETU's Stuart Traill said the government-owned corporations' offer of employment security was an "election stunt" and "took away job security for future employees".

"It is something that they all have already, but the current provisions in Energex have still seen a reduction in staff of 750 in the last three years," he said.

"And they are trying to get workers to give away a significant amount of rights, including things like protections for use of contractors and safety provisions about when workers can perform single person tasks".

Mr Traill said the new arrangements only applied for the next three years.  All three GOCs will undergo changes if the government wins the next election and its electricity privatisation plan can be enacted.

Mr Traill said the union had suggested the original agreement be rolled over, with a 0 per cent pay increase during the negotiations, but was knocked back.

But the government said all three companies had completed their negotiations – which are separate from usual government daily business – in good faith.

He said it was up to employees to gauge the agreement for themselves.

"Importantly, as Queensland heads into storm season, this option will offer employees peace-of-mind about their futures, Mr Nicholls said last week.

"So they can focus on their vital work maintaining a safe and reliable electricity supply to all Queenslanders."

The unions have vowed to continue to fight.
