Eagles coach Adam Simpson said the club was down on numbers to start the pre-season after players who would normally have been put in cotton wool continuing to train and play while the club remained in finals contention.

Forward Jack Darling is yet to start his pre-season as he recovers from a stress foot fracture, which kept him in a moon boot for most of the off-season.

Club physiotherapist Paul Tucker said Darling's last scan showed the injury was healing well but he expected the 22-year-old would not start running until after Christmas.

Yeo, who impressed in a 2km time trial on Monday, injured his hand at training and underwent surgery on Wednesday.

He is likely to be sidelined until early in the new year.

The former Brisbane Lion broke his hand in the Eagles round 13 win over the Gold Coast and did not play AFL again until round 23.

The pair join join Eric Mackenzie (hip surgery), Xavier Ellis (shoulder), Murray Newman, Scott Selwood, Sharrod Wellingham, Mitch Brown, Pat McGinnity, Matt Rosa, Brad Sheppard and Brant Colledge on restricted programs before Christmas.

Rosa, who was restricted to 14 games last season because of a pectoral injury, is also recovering from recent minor ankle surgery.

The good news for West Coast is that veteran defender Beau Waters has returned to the main training group.

Waters missed the entire 2014 season, having been sidelined since round 15, 2013, but Tucker said he is making great progress.

"Beau Waters has come back in really, really good shape and he's worked really hard in the off-season," he said.

"He's basically in with the rest of the group, training at present.

"He'll pull out of some of the contact work until post-Christmas, but as a general feeling it's all really positive."
