Mitch Cleary organised the five-day trip to a secret spot in the Gulf of Carpentaria with six mates to help raise money for his 18-month-old nephew Jett, who is suffering from leukaemia.
“I just wanted to try to find new ways to raise money for him ... something different,” he said.
Each member of the group, who all work at George Fisher Mine, paid $900 for the all-inclusive trip to a secret fishing spot.
It was Mr Cleary’s first time to the spot so he was hopeful it would prove a fruitful venture.
And it did – with a massive haul of fingermark, trout, barramundi, sweet-lip, among other species - making for enough fish to go round when the group returned to Mount Isa.
Mr Cleary said he was amazed with the support of six local businesses – Worn Out West, Town ’N’ Country Diesel and Automotive, screen printer Misprints, Turanga Butchery, Ozzie Outdoors and Second-hand and Raps Surf and Turf Iceworks – who donated goods to help offset some of the costs of the trip so that proceeds could be donated to the charity.
Mr Cleary also thanked Russell McCarthy who took his own boat on the trip and Trent Simpson.
A cheque of $2700 was donated to the Leukemia Foundation from the trip and Mr Cleary is hoping to do similar ventures in the future to help raise money.
