Up to 30,000 Queensland school leavers are expected to spend time on the Gold Coast during the week, seen by many as a rite of passage after completing year 12.

While there is a chance of rain and storms on Friday, near perfect conditions and 30-degree weather is predicted for the following four days.

This year is the first time trams will be running on the Gold Coast during Schoolies, and police say the network will be watched closely.

"The tram system will be used by our beat police to monitor the behaviour of passengers," said Des Lacy, Gold Coast Police Acting Chief Superintendent.

"We've worked very closely with GoldLinQ and GoldLinQ is providing a number of security for the stations."

Extra early morning trams departing Cavill station will run from Sunday to next Thursday, while buses will run throughout the night.

With 1000 volunteers around Surfers Paradise and extra officers on the streets, Mr Lacy urged schoolies to work with police.

"The police are there to help you...we're there to watch you and make sure you're safe," he said.

Queensland Emergency Medicine Research Foundation chair Dr Peter Aitken encouraged schoolies to employ a "buddy system" to stay safe.

"Emergency departments are busy enough without an influx of drunk and reckless patients," he said.

"No matter where they are, we want school leavers who get together at celebrations big and small to choose a buddy wisely and stick together."

All schoolies will be required to carry photo ID to enter designated party precincts set up for the week-long event.
