They've been called dangerous and dubbed a "silent killer" by certain sections of the media, but this so-called threat to schoolies isn't booze or drugs - it's the Gold Coast's new trams.

With school leavers pouring into the Gold Coast on Saturday, 2014 will be the first year when the light rail network will operate in an environment with up to 30,000 teenage revellers.
The FLEXITY2 trams are capable of reaching speeds of 70 km/h, however the average speed on the network is about 25km/h.
Since opening in July - and in the months when trial runs were conducted - several cars have collided with the trams. Other drivers have inadvertently stranded themselves on the tracks.
There have been a host of pedestrian near-misses but no reports of injuries.
The chair of the Gold Coast Schoolies Advisory Group, Mark Raeburn, says the trams are a bit of an unknown, but has no reason to think they will cause major problems.
"It may be an issue in relation to kids that just aren't used to the light rail walking across the road," he said.
"It's something we haven't contended with before, but I know both the police, emergency services and tram operators are putting on extra staff on."
Safety aside, Mr Raeburn predicts the trams will have an impact on Schoolies in the long run.
"I think what we'll see over the next year or two is the accommodation bookings start to move further south to Broadbeach and north to Southport, because the kids can jump on the light rail and get in to the main hub at Surfers," he said.
GoldlinQ communications director Jason Ward said extra security would be on duty on the tram network, which includes 16 stops from the Gold Coast University Hospital to Broadbeach South.
While the trams were packed for the recent Gold Coast 600 motorsports event, Mr Ward said there was not expected to be a large patronage increase during schoolies.
"There does need to be a heightened level of awareness, particularly this week. Our drivers are quite experienced now and they understand the conditions," he said.
"It's essentially driver policy to drive to the conditions. That means if you need to, slow down."
Acting Chief Superintendent Des Lacy said the tram network would be closely monitored by police.
