“Mount Isa community members are consistently empowering each other to report suspicious activity, share this information with their family, friends and neighbours in many forms,” Ms Barnes said.
“This is evident through the partnerships which exist within community members, volunteers, crimestoppers, Mount Isa City Council and our emergency services to name a few.
“We know the positive effects of the community being the eyes and ears of the police.
“With this in practice, relationships will continue to foster a strong community safety feeling and contribute to prevention of crime.”
The group is driving a number of projects to educate the community.
“We will be involved in a new initiative ‘Think U Know’ over the next 12 months which is an Internet safety program delivering interactive training to parents, carers, teachers and children through schools and organisations across Australia,” Ms Barnes said.
The program was developed by the Australian Federal Police, Microsoft Australia and Datacom and is supported by the Northern Territory, Queensland South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia Police forces along with Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.
A number of projects are currently under way by the group including Sun Block, Crime Stop, Storm Ready and Our Watch Walking Group which will be rolled in the six-to-12 months.
■Neighbourhood Watch Mount Isa will hold its public AGM on November 26 at 630pm, Buffs Club. RSVPs are essential to tomtisanhw
