As always, the key theme of the event focused on Prevention, Preparation, Response and Recovery and the role and responsibilities that individuals and emergency services have in the lead-up to, during and after disaster events.
Residents had the opportunity to hear from Kevin Andersen of the SES, Gavin Fryar of the Rural Fire service, Matt Lord of the Queensland Police and Philip Keirle of the Burke Shire Council.
The agencies had met earlier in the day as members of the Local Disaster Management Group to discuss their disaster response capabilities.
“While residents of the shire are well-versed in planning for cyclones, floods and fires, it is always important to take stock in the lead up to the disaster season to ensure that emergency plans are up to date, generators are fuelled and that there are plenty of baked beans in the pantry,” Shire chief executive Philip Keirle said.
“I urge individuals and businesses to get in touch with the council and the range of emergency services agencies – SES, Rural Fire, Police and Health – and make use of the many hints, tips and services offered by these agencies.”
