Skytrans managing director Simon Wild said the Cairns-Mount Isa route had been a winner for company and the airline was investigating more opportunities.
“We continue with Cairns to Mount Isa – we are very pleased with recent sales and it is a very important and very promising part of our business,” he said
“We’re looking to see what other services we can implement to Mount Isa.”
There is also interest from Skytrans in Cloncurry with the subsidised QantasLink route Northern 3 (Townsville-Cloncurry-Mt Isa) deregulated and opened to competition from January 1, 2015.
“Cloncurry has been deregulated and communities in the Gulf have also approached the company expressing their desire for Skytrans to operate to Mount Isa,” Mr Wild said.
Mr Wild said the communities Skytrans operates in are “very important” to the company, but he conceded there would be some tightening due to the loss of Queensland transport routes.
Mr Wild said the company would continue to support the communities in which it operated.
Rex picked up routes previously operated by Skytrans, including Western 1 (Brisbane-Toowoomba-St George-Cunnamulla-Thargomindah), Western 2 (Brisbane-Toowoomba-Charleville-Quilpie-Windorah-Birdsville-Bedourie-Boulia-Mount Isa) and Gulf (Cairns-Normanton-Mornington Island-Burketown-Doomadgee-Mount Isa) routes.
