The Dockers were believed to be looking to add some height to their squad, but decided to take 182-centimetre midfielder Lachie Weller from Southport with their first selection.

Weller, who is from Tasmania, but has been playing in Queensland, is the brother of the St Kilda's Maverick Weller. He is quick, but Fremantle will also welcome the fact that he makes good decisions and has clean disposal.

He told Radio 6PR's Sports Today on Thursday night he had "a million missed calls", one of which he figured might have been Dockers coach Ross Lyon.

Weller has only been to Perth once ("a long time ago") but will find some familiarity in Fremantle, given he originally hails from the Burnie Dockers, who sport the same logo and colours.

"I hear it [Perth] is a lot like the Gold Coast," Weller said.

"I had no idea [where I would end up]. Club kept their cards pretty close to themselves, it was a big surprise [to go to Freo] but very exciting.

"I'll work on my weaknesses, train really hard and hopefully can break into the team."

Connor Blakely is a big-bodied midfielder (189 centimetres, 84 kilograms) from Swan Districts (previously from Bunbury) who is also headed to the Dockers.

As is Ed Langdon, who at 181 centimetres and 74 kilograms is a lot lighter than Blakely, but will likely relish the space at Patersons Stadium. He is also the brother of Collingwood's Tom Langdon.

Josh Deluca had 20 touches for Subiaco in its Grand Final win over East Perth this year. He played 12 league games for the Lions in 2014.

The Eagles opted for all Victorian-based players in Thursday's draft.

They used their first pick (number 11) on Liam Duggan, who could easily have been taken earlier.

Duggan finished equal-seventh in the three-kilometre time trial in a time of 10:11 and registered 26/30 in the kicking test at the AFL draft combine.

"I'm over the moon about the selection and really grateful about the opportunity," Duggan told Sports Today.

"I chatted with most clubs across the year and since draft combine a further nine. Since then it was a bit quiet and I was thinking I might get picked up between the eight and 12 mark in the draft.

"Apparently left footers can't kick on their right but I'm trying to prove that wrong."

Tom Lamb not only knows where the goals are, but he can run. He impressed at the combine, finishing second in the three-kilometre time trial with a time of 9:45 and third in the beep test with 15.5. His dad Wayne played footy at both Melbourne and Fitzroy.

Damien Cavka is an elite runner and will be capable of playing through the midfield, but he and Jackson Nelson will also add some much-needed depth to the Eagle defensive options.

West Coast had already committed to Alec Waterman, the son of premiership player Chris, under the father-son rule and made the selection official on Thursday.

Meanwhile, South Fremantle had three players selected, with Jarrod Pickett going to the GWS Giants with pick four.
Jarrod Garlett is heading to the Gold Coast after he was snapped up with pick 15, while Port Adelaide used pick 84 on William Frampton.

Swan Districts and Claremont each had two players picked up in the draft.

The Tigers' Mitch McGovern (taken at pick 43) will be watched with interest as he suits up at Adelaide, being the brother of West Coast's Jeremy.
