After winning the event last year with the Bob Burow-trained Boltonian, Chambers was confident ahead of the race.
But it wasn’t to be as Chambers and Steven Royes’ Revel In The Chaos lost the 1600 metre Class 4 Handicap by 0.1 lengths to Peter Cullen and Roman Pleasure.
“Revel In The Chaos was gallant in defeat and fought all the way to the line,” Chambers said.
“It was a spine-tingling finish that could have gone either way and unfortunately, it didn’t go our way this time.
“Eventual winner Roman Pleasure led him into the straight but Revel In The Chaos showed plenty of heart to fight back.
“The weight probably played a factor, as he was carrying 61kg, while the winner ridden by Peter Cullen only carried the minimum of 56 kilograms.”
North West trainers had a strong overall meet though, claiming two winners of the five-race program.
Winton trainer Ray Hermann won the 1000 metre Maiden Plate with Cowardofthecounty.
The five-year-old stallion won by a convincing 5.3 lengths, ahead of Ben Williams’ Who’s Your Caddy and Top Decision.
Julia Creek trainer Tanya Parry won the 1200 metre Class B Handicap with Rodney Sue-San and Paleo.
The four-year-old gelding won by 0.2 lengths to Guy Hall’s Garden City and Parry’s other runner Ten Torinos.
Charters Towers trainer Ben Williams’ Shadows won the final two races of the day.
Shadows of Sin won the 800 metre Class 3 Plate by 0.1 lengths, and More Than a Song had a dead heat with Alby Molino’s Bellaspirit in the 1200 metre Benchmark 75 Handicap.
