While insiders say the Premier remains confident his government will be comfortably returned, others are not so sure, concerned with both the effect the Abbott government could have and the "general feeling" of dissatisfaction within the community.

The state's unemployment rate - which at 6.4 per cent (trend) the latest Commonwealth Bank state of the states report put at 26.8 per cent above the decade average - is emerging as one of the key issues for the government at the next election.

"We have a plan, but it's a hard sell," one MP said.

"People are just seeing unemployment go up and telling them 'we can fix this' doesn't seem to be getting through right now.

"At the moment it is manageable because Labor doesn't seem to have an answer right now either. But they don't have to yet."

Even heartland seats such as Gregory, recently vacated by the retiring Vaughan Johnson with agricultural minister John McVeigh's advisor Lachlan Millar winning the nomination, are being treated as "at risk".

For the past 18 months, Labor has been quietly campaigning at a grassroots level across Queensland, borrowing from the Goss campaign of 1989 by concentrating on key electorates.

"There are some seats we are more worried about than others," another MP said.

"Up north and Brisbane is mainly what we are concentrating on. But we are being told to take nothing for granted."

It's a massive turn around for a party which won a historic 78 seats at the last election, with one MP joking "we're the underdogs", but LNP State Director Brad Henderson said it was normal not to "take a single vote for granted".

"With so much at stake for Queensland, the LNP will be talking to voters about the clear choice they face at the 2015 election," he said.

"A strong LNP team with a strong plan to continue taking Queensland forward or the chaos of Labor and the minor parties who have no plan for our great state."

Labor is expecting to pick up anywhere between 20 and 25 seats at the next election.

Opposition leader Annastacia Palaszczuk effectively launched Labor's official election campaign on Tuesday.

"We have now filled all but five of the state's 89 seats with high-calibre candidates," she said.

"…They are overwhelmingly fresh faces with fresh ideas, plus a handful of others experienced in the ways of Parliament and in the way government works.

"It is a big ask to win office from just nine out of 89 seats, but I can assure you and all Queenslanders and the LNP that Labor will be fighting the coming campaign to win, just as we always do.

"And remember, this is Queensland and anything can happen."

While the opposition has released some policies, it has held over its major announcements until next year, closer to the election.

Meanwhile, Mr Newman and his government switched into campaign mode in July following the Stafford by-election loss and have spent the last few months keeping quiet and staying "strong".

Having worked with consultants to develop the key message for the election campaign, Mr Newman and his ministers now unleash it as often as they can.

"There's going to be a big, strong contrast in this election between a strong team, a strong plan, a vision for the state's future and people who can deliver on jobs versus an opposition who had two and a half years, 22 staff and have failed to come up with one iota," Mr Newman said on Tuesday.

The Queensland election can be held anytime until June 20.
