Fairfax Media has been told State Cabinet on Monday will consider a report identifying the three dams which warrant detailed studies from the eight potential sites suggested in April 2014.

At that time the State Government announced it would study these sites for new dams;

1 - Linville on the Upper Brisbane River;

2 - Cooyar Creek near Benarkin National Park;

3 - Emu Creek near Harlin;

4 - Bremer River near Mt Walker;

5 - Stanley River near Peachester;

6 - Tenterhill Creek near Gatton;

7 - Lockyer Creek near Murphy's Creek; and

8 - Cressbrook Creek, near the town of Kipper.

Cabinet will also hear a report on the viability of raising the Wivenhoe Dam wall.

In April the Queensland Government reported its preliminary analysis showed raising the Wivenhoe Dam wall by 8 metres could save more than 1 million megalitres of water.

Raising Wivenhoe's dam wall has been considered several times before.

In 2011, the former Labor state government said raising Wivenhoe Dam wall by two metres would cost $830 million, take four years to build and would save an extra 437,000 megalitres.

Raising  Wivenhoe Dam by four metres would have cost $138 million in 2007, according the SEQ Water.

In April, Premier Campbell Newman told reporters it would cost $300 million to raise the Wivenhoe Dam wall.  

A 1991 study showed it would cost $140 million to build a new dam at Linville.

A media statement by Water Supply Minister Mark McArdle on November 26 suggested further announcements before Christmas.

"The Department of Energy and Water Supply is finalising a preliminary investigation into potential new dams and the raising of Wivenhoe Dam, with the findings due to be completed before Christmas," the statement read.

State Cabinet meets twice before Christmas; Monday December 8^th and December 15^th.

Fairfax Media understands an announcement about future in-depth dam studies would be made after Cabinet meets on Monday.

A spokesman for Mr McArdle declined to say whether Cabinet would discuss the issue on Monday.

It is understood State Cabinet will announce three potential dam sites that warrant further investigation; including Linville, which is north of Somerset Dam and south of Benarkin National Park.

Preliminary analysis in April 2014 suggested a new dam at Linville could store 663,000ML of water.

The Borumba Dam wall in the Mary Valley could also be raised.

Any dam at Linville would dam the east and west branches of the Upper Brisbane River, depending on the location.

In April, the state government also suggested dams outside Ipswich at Bremer River (near Mt Walker), Tenterhill Creek (near Gatton) and Lockyer Creek (near Murphy's Creek) could also be viable.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale in April welcomed the study, saying he was pleased a detailed investigation was underway.

"This is the first concrete suggestion I have seen for a dam on the Bremer River," Cr Pisasale said.

He said levees were impractical when it came to protecting Ipswich.

"Alternatives looked at in the past include a levee, but the topography of Ipswich makes it impossible to go down the levee path," he said.

"Another major benefit of the proposed dam near Mt Walker would hopefully be a reduction in insurance premiums for many properties currently at risk of flooding."

Environment Minister Andrew Powell was still unavailable on Friday to discuss progress of a new Environmental Taskforce, which is tipped to try to control millions of tonnes of sediment flowing downstream from farms on the Lockyer Valley to Port of Brisbane.

That environmental taskforce is also tipped to be announced after State Cabinet meets on Monday.

Fairfax Media reported on Friday that the build-up of sediment in Moreton Bay delayed oil tankers getting into Moreton Bay for five days at a time in 2011 and 2013 and remained a serious problem in 2014.

The source of funding for any major works is unclear, although Premier Campbell Newman in April suggested money would come from asset sales.

Since then the state government has shifted its emphasis towards long-term leasing of assets, from which it hopes to raise $37 billion.

From this $25 billion would be used to pay down Queensland's debt, while $8.6 billion would go towards a six-year investment program.

Dam construction could theoretically come from this investment program.
