The Mount Isa muay thai fighter can cap a breakthrough year by finishing as an Australian title holder when he fights for the World Kick Boxing Federation Australian middleweight crown.
New will take on Lyndon Bin Doharo in the title fight where he will seek redemption against the opponent who got the better of him at their last outing.
However, New is confident of turning the tables and scoring the title at Preacher Fight Night 15 in Brisbane.
“I’m the fittest I’ve been,” New said after an intensive training preparation, including twice daily sessions.
“I’m confident and believe in the training I’ve done and my skills and ability.”
New describes Bin Doharo as a “busy and very fit fighter” and he hopes to counteract that trait by using an element of surprise early in the bout.
“I’ll be actively looking for opportunities the whole fight,” he said.
“I’ll be looking to break his spirit early on.”
New’s rise through the sport this year has seen him raise the bar, lifting his original ambition of being a state title holder to fighting for the national crown.
He admits there’s added pressure with the increased stakes, but he’s confident of making Mount Isa proud.
Some of his Mount Isa friends and family will make the trek to Brisbane to be ringside for the title fight.
New will strip one kilogram today before tonight’s weigh-in where he will tip the scales at 75kg.
He made special mention of coach Bruce “The Preacher’’ Macfie, training partner Aaron ‘‘Azzatron’’ Smith and local business sponsors RKS Contracting and 2PH Contracting along with ASN Chermside
