Despite raising more than $40 million over the past two years, LNP state director Brad Henderson has put his name to an email sent out to "everyday Queenslanders like you" asking for their financial support.

"Here's the challenge – we are up against the combined resources of Labor and the unions," he wrote.

"With an election around the corner, we need the financial resources to fight back."

According to returns lodged with the Electoral Commission Queensland, the Labor Party raised half what the LNP did over the same period.

Under changes to fundraising declaration limits pushed through by the government last year, any donation of less than $12,800 does not have to be publicly declared.

Mr Henderson said the money was needed for the upcoming election campaign, which is all but confirmed to occur early next year.

"Labor are already running attack ads," he said in the email.

"With only a few months to go, we don't have any time to waste."

Labor has been running its own fundraising drive, including a $2500-a-head lunch event in October, which offered attendees a chance to talk policy with state leader Annastacia Palaszczuk and access to federal leader Bill Shorten. Labor has continued to declare any donations of more than $1000.

Voters can expect to be bombarded with election ads and materials from both sides, particularly those in Brisbane and north Queensland seats thought to be capable of large swings away from the government.

Under the same legislation which raised the donation declaration limit from $1000 to the indexed federal government declaration threshold, political parties will no longer have to adhere to campaign or electoral spending limits.

The Opposition has been running a campaign against government advertising for the past few months, accusing the Premier of breaking his own advertising guidelines by running tax-payer funded ads six months before an election.

Mr Newman and senior ministers, such as Health Minister Lawrence Springborg and Treasurer Tim Nicholls, have defended the advertising campaigns, which include 'Strong Choices' and the government's surgery wait-time guarantee, as necessary to inform the public.

In response to questions from Fairfax Media, Mr Henderson said the LNP had a tough battle.

"In the coming state election, the LNP is up against a Labor party which receives millions of dollars in donations each year from unions who also conduct their own third party campaigns," he said.

"As the party for all Queenslanders, the LNP relies on the support of people from right across the wider community.

"All LNP fundraising is declared in accordance with state and federal electoral laws."

The election date is yet to be set.
